The Racing Integrity Unit (RIU) has today charged Mr Brett McDonald, Public Trainer, and Ms Tanya Donaldson, Stable Foreman, of Cambridge with drug administration offenses relating to four horses Mr McDonald entered at the thoroughbred racing trials at Ruakaka on 9 December 2014.

These charges follow a detailed investigation by the RIU over the past two months.

At the trial meeting, one of the horses trained by Mr McDonald, an unnamed three year old by Lucky Unicorn out of Lady Franscesca fell injuring itself and jockey Chris Dell. Dell received serious injuries and was hospitalised. The horse broke both front legs and was quickly and humanely euthanized.

Analysis of post mortem samples taken from the horse revealed Phenylbutazone (a pain killer/anti- inflammatory) in its system. The use of this drug on race and trial day is prohibited.

As the matter is now before the Judicial Control Authority the RIU will make no further comment.
