The RIU today charged the Chief Handicapper and Race Planner of NZ Thoroughbred Racing, Mr Dennis Quirke with breaching the betting rules.

Mr Quirke was charged under Rule 706 (h), which prohibits betting by officials and also with a Serious Racing Offence, Rule 801 (1) (s) (i), in that he did an act which a Judicial Committee deems detrimental to the interests of racing.

The charges relate to bets Mr Quirke placed on five New Zealand races in the period August to October 2015. The bets totalled $627 over the five races.

Under the Rules of Racing handicappers cannot bet on New Zealand thoroughbred races. The RIU undertakes regular audits of the betting accounts of officials that are prohibited from betting and it was through this activity that the breaches were identified.

As the matter is before the Judicial Control Authority no further comment can be made by the RIU.
